Devotees Celebrate Day Five of Navratri with Worship of Goddess Skandamata
On the fifth day of Navratri, devotees honor Goddess Skandamata, seeking blessings for prosperity and family well-being.

Noida, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Today marks the fifth day of Navratri, during which devotees will honor Goddess Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga. Temples are expected to be filled with worshippers, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with chants and prayers. Skandamata symbolizes maternal love, nurturing, and feminine strength. According to religious beliefs, worshipping her brings prosperity, peace, and positive energy to devotees. Many seek her blessings for the well-being of their children and families.
Goddess Skandamata, also known as the mother of Lord Kartikeya, is revered for her role in nurturing divine strength. In mythology, Lord Kartikeya, also called Skand Kumar, is recognized as the commander of the gods. His birth was deemed essential for defeating the demon Tarakasura, who could only be slain by the son of Lord Shiva. This narrative highlights the significance of Skandamata in the divine hierarchy.
In religious iconography, Skandamata is often depicted seated on a lotus, emphasizing her nurturing nature. She is seen as a protector who inspires courage, strength, and righteousness in her children. In Indian culture, mothers are revered as symbols of sacrifice, love, compassion, and protection, and the worship of Skandamata reinforces these values.
During this auspicious day, devotees pray for family peace, the bright futures of their children, and the removal of obstacles in their lives. The birth of Lord Kartikeya and his victory over Tarakasura are central to the beliefs surrounding this day. The union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is also celebrated as a significant event in Hindu traditions.
Devotees can chant the mantra, “या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मातृरूपेण संस्थिता. नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥” which translates to honoring the Goddess present in all beings as the embodiment of maternal strength. During worship, offerings of flowers, lighted lamps, and recitations of mantras are made to seek her blessings.
The fifth day of Navratri serves as a reminder of the importance of motherhood, compassion, courage, and duty. Through their devotion to Skandamata, worshippers aspire for their families’ happiness and peace within society. Faithfully performed rituals are believed to grant devotees spiritual tranquility and positivity.
