Washington (USA), September 26 (Udaipur Kiran News). As the threat of a government shutdown looms large in the United States, Democrats appear prepared for a direct confrontation with former President Donald J. Trump. Party leaders and grassroots activists argue that the biggest mistake would not be losing to Trump in a shutdown battle, but refusing to fight at all.

According to NBC News, Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of the progressive group Indivisible, said Democrats now realise the gravity and danger of the situation and are ready to use all their resources to respond. Indivisible has thousands of chapters across the country.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared that this time Democrats are determined to resist what they call wrong policies of the Trump administration, even hinting at using filibusters to block Republican moves. Reports suggest federal funds could run out by midnight Wednesday, forcing agencies to shut down.

Democratic supporters are urging their leaders to secure concessions, particularly an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies that are about to expire. Some even believe allowing a shutdown would be better than compromising without gains.

Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly refused to negotiate with Democratic leaders. His budget director, Russ Vought, warned that if Democrats do not accept the Republican bill to fund the government until November, thousands of federal employees may lose their jobs. This aggressive stance has put Democrats in a bind.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries avoided directly answering whether expanding Obamacare funding alone would suffice, but stressed that any deal must safeguard healthcare protections. He also called on Republicans to roll back proposed Medicaid cuts.

Economic experts point out that Democrats are hesitant to compromise, fearing Trump could sidestep congressional decisions and refuse funding for programs he dislikes β€” a move currently under judicial review.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut urged colleagues to rethink their strategy, warning that if Trump can ignore parts of a deal he opposes, β€œthere is no spending agreement possible.”

Grassroots leaders such as Rebecca Katz, a Democratic strategist, and Jane Kleeb, chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, emphasised that ordinary Democrats may not be excited about Washington budget fights but do expect their leaders to stand up to Trump. The situation recalls the 2018–2019 β€œTrump Shutdown,” the longest in U.S. history, which stemmed from a funding dispute over the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
