New Delhi, 08 December (Daily Kiran) – Delhi Police has opposed the discharge plea of Lalit Jha, accused in the Parliament security breach case, in the High Court. On Monday, the police submitted their response to Lalit Jha’s application seeking to be cleared of charges. Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal ordered that the arguments on framing charges against the accused and Lalit Jha’s discharge plea will continue on 9 December.

During Monday’s hearing, all accused appeared before the court. Earlier, on 2 July, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to two accused, Neelam Azad and Mahesh Kumawat, on a surety of Rs 50,000 each. The court also directed them not to hold press conferences or give media interviews related to the case. Both were prohibited from posting anything about the incident on social media. Additionally, the court ordered them to report to the concerned police station at 10 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Delhi Police filed a supplementary charge sheet in this case on 15 July 2024. The charges against the accused include various sections of the Indian Penal Code such as 186, 353, 153, 452, 201, 34, 120B, along with sections 13, 16, and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The first charge sheet was filed on 7 June 2024.

The police have named Lalit Jha, Amol Shinde, Mahesh Kumawat, Sagar Sharma, and Neelam Azad among the accused in the UAPA charges. The initial charge sheet submitted by Delhi Police runs to nearly 1,000 pages.

The incident occurred on 13 December 2023, when two accused jumped from the visitor gallery into the Parliament chamber. One of them reportedly took out an object from his shoe and released yellow smoke, causing panic in the house. Amid the chaos, some MPs caught the youths and assaulted them. Later, Parliament security personnel took both into custody. Outside Parliament, two others were also detained for shouting slogans and releasing yellow smoke.
