Delhi High Court Denies Bail to Pakistani Diplomatic Official Accused of Espionage
The Delhi High Court has denied bail to Habib ur Rehman, a Pakistani official accused of espionage, citing the seriousness of the charges.

New Delhi, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has denied bail to Habib ur Rehman, a Pakistani diplomatic official accused of espionage. This decision was made on October 23, considering the serious nature of the allegations against him.
Rehman, who suffers from multiple health issues, had previously been granted bail on medical grounds. However, he sought regular bail in court, which was ultimately rejected by the High Court.
Taking into account Rehman’s medical condition, the court instructed authorities to ensure he receives necessary medical examinations, consultations with specialists, physiotherapy, and treatment while in custody. The High Court noted a report from AIIMS, indicating that essential medical care could be provided to him in jail.
Rehman’s lawyer argued that bail should not be denied solely based on the severity of the charges. He pointed out that the sensitive documents in question were already in the court’s possession, minimizing the risk of evidence tampering.
The court acknowledged that Rehman has already spent over three years in jail. It emphasized that no individual should be held indefinitely based on the gravity of criminal charges, especially when the trial’s timely conclusion is uncertain. However, the court noted that the circumstances of this case are unique, as the trial court has already framed charges, and the prosecution has begun presenting its evidence.
While considering the bail application, the court found no basis for granting bail given the current pace of the trial proceedings.
Rehman is accused of possessing sensitive documents related to military training and allegedly acted as an intermediary for the Pakistan High Commission to relay military information. He was arrested in 2021 under the Official Secrets Act of 1923.
