New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of Delhi announced on September 11, 2026, that the government is committed to removing children from the streets and connecting them with education, skills, and dignified livelihoods.
During a meeting of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), Gupta urged the commission to strengthen its campaign against child begging through community involvement. She emphasized the need to engage non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), and resident welfare associations (RWAs) to increase outreach to children at the local level.
The meeting included DCPCR Chairman OP Vyas, commission members, and senior officials. Gupta highlighted the importance of child safety, suggesting that awareness campaigns regarding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act should become ongoing initiatives.
She underscored the necessity of mandatory police verification for school staff, including bus and van drivers, attendants, and cleaning personnel, to ensure there is no negligence in child safety.
Gupta also called for detailed information about the futures of children in child care institutions (CCIs) to be compiled. She directed the commission to prepare a list of children in after-care facilities, which should include their names, ages, associated institutions, duration of stay, education, qualifications, and skills learned.
The Chief Minister stressed that providing shelter alone is insufficient for children leaving these institutions. They must also be linked to education, skills, and employment opportunities to foster self-reliance. She proposed that the transportation department could facilitate auto-rickshaws for interested girls and e-rickshaws for boys to help them start respectable livelihoods.
Additionally, Gupta instructed the commission to inspect the mid-day meals prepared by cooks in schools and the nutritious food provided to children at Anganwadi centers during National Nutrition Month. She insisted that any deficiencies discovered should be reported immediately.
The meeting also addressed the need for reports on facilities and the behavior of Anganwadi workers towards children, prepared through interns. Gupta suggested enhancing career guidance services for students in government and municipal schools.
