Pune, February 22: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta urged student MPs on Saturday to prioritize public service while maintaining discipline, teamwork, and integrity in political life.

Speaking at the inaugural address of the 15th Indian Student Parliament in Pune, Gupta emphasized that while victories in sports are team achievements, true success in politics should belong to the people.

Addressing the theme “From Stadium to Statesmanship: What Politics Can Learn from Sports,” he noted that sports serve as a vital training ground for leadership and public life.

Gupta stated that just as athletes dedicate themselves to enhancing their country’s honor, public representatives must also commit selflessly to uphold the nation’s dignity.

He highlighted that the values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship can strengthen democratic institutions and improve political functioning.

In a democracy, he explained, the Constitution acts as a guiding framework, similar to a rulebook in sports that ensures fairness and accountability.

Gupta encouraged young leaders to view political opponents as competitors rather than enemies and stressed the importance of respecting democratic outcomes.

He remarked, “A captain’s true test comes in difficult times; likewise, a leader’s character is revealed during the nation’s challenges.”

Referencing India’s long-term development vision, he stated that the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047 can be achieved through the active participation of youth in governance and nation-building.

He emphasized that a strong political culture requires competence, transparency, and dedication, urging young leaders to contribute positively to public life.

Gupta also underscored the role of technology and innovation in governance, noting that digital tools can enhance transparency and improve the delivery of public services.

He encouraged students to view failures as learning opportunities and to continuously strive for excellence.

Additionally, he praised the Indian Student Parliament initiative for providing a platform for youth to engage in democratic processes and develop leadership skills.

Gupta concluded by stating that leaders should focus on serving the country and its people to strengthen India’s position globally.
