New Delhi, March 27: The Delhi Assembly issued a warning on Friday to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and two other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for spreading false and baseless claims regarding the ‘Hanging House.’
This warning was formalized through a resolution passed under Rule 77(1)(A) of the Assembly. Former Speaker Ram Niwas Goyal and former Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla also received warnings.
Chairman Vijender Gupta stated that the Assembly holds the authority to impose strict penalties. However, he opted for judicial restraint in this case, issuing only a formal warning to maintain the dignity of the Assembly.
He emphasized that the false accusations regarding the ‘Hanging House’ are disrespectful to the historical significance of this building. This structure is linked to India’s freedom struggle, and associating it with a hanging house is inappropriate.
The Chairman noted that this is the only Assembly ever visited by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi mentioned in his autobiography, “The Story of My Experiments with Truth,” that he listened to the debate on the Rowlatt Bill here in March 1919.
He pointed out that the Rowlatt Act was passed in this Assembly on March 18, 1919, which led Gandhi to initiate the Non-Cooperation Movement. The shooting of peaceful protesters in Chandni Chowk on March 30, 1919, which Gandhi described as a precursor to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, was a direct outcome of the Assembly’s discussions.
The Chairman also recalled that during the 1918 War Conference, 1.3 million Indians were recruited for World War I, with many young villagers from places like Bawana, Kanjhawala, Alipur, Badli, Najafgarh, and Mehrauli sacrificing their lives.
He stated that the committee will specifically highlight the falsehoods surrounding the ‘Hanging House’ in its third report. The Assembly Secretariat and the committee will ensure that false information or disregard for officials never compromises the sanctity of the House.
