New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has welcomed the Union Budget 2026-27, describing it as a clear indication of the government’s intent to strengthen the country’s security following the historic success of Operation Sindoor. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this decisive move.
Rajnath Singh highlighted that the defence sector has been allocated a substantial budget of ₹7.85 lakh crore this year. He explained that the budget strikes a balanced approach between security, development, and self-reliance. Out of the total, ₹2.19 lakh crore is earmarked as capital expenditure for the armed forces, with ₹1.85 lakh crore specifically designated for the procurement of weapons and equipment. This allocation marks nearly a 24% increase compared to the previous year, which will significantly enhance the strength and modernisation of the military.
The Defence Minister also addressed the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families. He mentioned that ₹12,100 crore has been allocated for the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), representing an increase of about 45% from last year. This, he said, reflects the government’s strong commitment to the well-being of former defence personnel.
Rajnath Singh congratulated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on presenting an excellent budget. He noted that the budget meets public expectations and lays a solid foundation for a self-reliant and developed India. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India is progressing rapidly towards becoming a developed nation. The minister described this budget as one inspired by the energy of the youth, aimed at turning dreams into reality and potential into performance.
He further stated that this budget, driven by three core duties, will accelerate economic growth, fulfil the aspirations of the people, and ensure inclusive participation in development. Special focus has been placed on extending the benefits of growth to the poor, underprivileged, and weaker sections of society.
