Howrah, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Several offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), known as CPI(M), were reportedly vandalized late Tuesday night in the Bali area of Howrah, West Bengal. The party has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attacks, a claim the BJP has firmly denied.
According to CPI(M) leaders, the vandalism occurred at the Devangaji zonal party office on Panchanantala Road and another office on Belur Station Road, among others in the vicinity. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of individuals arrived on motorcycles and caused destruction for approximately 45 minutes.
This incident took place just hours after a program organized by the CPI(M)’s youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), near the Bali canal, attended by party leaders including Deepasita Dhar. Following the event, tensions reportedly escalated in the area, leading to the attacks on party offices.
Shankar Maitra, a member of the district committee, stated that local BJP leaders were involved, claiming they vandalized four party offices and even locked one of them. He expressed frustration that despite filing a complaint, police had not taken any action.
In response, BJP leader Raja Goswami rejected the allegations, asserting that party members were engaged in a Ganesh Puja and a distribution program at the time of the incident. He stated that he learned about the attacks through the media and emphasized that the BJP had no connection to the vandalism.
This incident follows a similar occurrence earlier in Jalpaiguri, where CPI(M) offices were also reportedly attacked and set on fire, with the party again attributing the violence to individuals linked to the BJP.
