Chennai, March 17: The situation regarding seat allocation in the DMK-led coalition for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is becoming increasingly serious. The CPI is firmly refusing to accept fewer than six seats, the same number it secured in the 2021 elections. This decision was made during a meeting of the state executive committee held at the party headquarters on Monday.
During this meeting, the discussions with DMK leadership were reviewed, and the ongoing deadlock over seat distribution among coalition partners was deliberated. Party leaders analyzed recent political developments and reiterated that the CPI’s demand for six seats is justified and consistent with its previous participation in the coalition. The party has undergone significant changes since the last assembly elections.
CPI leadership believes that maintaining its previous number of seats is crucial not only for organizational strength but also for sustaining balance within the coalition. Leaders expressed concerns that any attempt to reduce the number of allocated seats could disrupt internal harmony and lead to dissatisfaction among workers and supporters.
Parallel discussions are also taking place between CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian and CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam, as the leftist parties aim to present a united front in negotiations with the DMK.
This development comes at a time when the DMK is looking to include new allies in the coalition ahead of the elections, complicating negotiations further. Existing coalition partners are wary of any moves that could diminish their representation.
As the assembly elections approach, the allocation of seats has emerged as a significant challenge for the DMK-led coalition. It remains to be seen whether the DMK will concede to the demands of its allies, which will play a crucial role in finalizing the electoral strategy and maintaining unity within the coalition.
