Controversy Erupts Over Kamal Haasans Comments on Chola Heritage in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, April 19: A political controversy has emerged in Tamil Nadu following actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s remarks during an election campaign at Chennai Harbor. He compared the temple reconstruction efforts of Minister Sekar Babu to those of the legendary Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola I. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned these comments.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad described Haasan’s remarks as “extremely regrettable” and an “insult to the legacy of one of history’s greatest Tamil rulers.” Haasan had stated that Sekar Babu had conducted more ‘Kumbhabhishekam’ (temple consecration) ceremonies than Raja Raja Chola, prompting Prasad to demand that Haasan retract his statements and publicly apologize.

Prasad emphasized that Raja Raja Chola’s contributions to Tamil civilization, administration, and temple architecture are unparalleled, making any political comparisons inappropriate. He highlighted the achievements of the Chola emperor, noting that Raja Raja Chola I commissioned the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, a prime example of Dravidian architecture, and expanded the Chola empire into Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia.

He also pointed out that the ruler established administrative systems and a tradition of temple grants that allowed religious activities to be conducted in an organized manner.

Further criticizing the DMK government and Minister Sekar Babu, Prasad accused them of mismanagement within the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) department, claiming that many temples in the state are struggling to perform basic rituals.

Prasad commented on Haasan’s political ties with the DMK, suggesting that his remarks may have been influenced by his closeness to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. He urged Haasan to reflect on his comments and understand their seriousness.

Demanding corrective measures, Prasad suggested that Haasan should visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple to pay homage to Raja Raja Chola. He warned that failing to apologize could hurt public sentiments, especially among those who honor the Chola legacy.

This controversy arises amid intensifying campaigning ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, where historical and cultural symbols are being widely utilized to sway voters.
