Controversial Marriage of Kumbh Mela Viral Star Monalisa Sparks Legal and Political Turmoil

Thiruvananthapuram, April 10: The marriage of Monalisa Bhonsle, known as the ‘Kumbh Mela Viral Star,’ has plunged into a serious legal and political controversy in Kerala. Following revelations about her being a minor, the Madhya Pradesh police have filed a case against her husband, Farman Khan, under the POCSO Act.

This case emerged after an investigation by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST). According to the commission, Monalisa was born on December 30, 2009, making her only 16 years old at the time of the marriage.

The commission has also alleged that a fake birth certificate was prepared to facilitate the marriage. In connection with this case, summons have been issued to the DGPs of Kerala and Madhya Pradesh to appear in Delhi on April 22.

Notably, this high-profile wedding took place on March 11 at a temple in Poovar, near Thiruvananthapuram, and received political backing. Prior to the marriage, the couple sought police protection at the Thampanoor police station, citing threats from their families.

The presence of senior leaders from the CPI(M) at the wedding further fueled discussions. Party state secretary M.V. Govindan, Education Minister V. Shivankutty, and Rajya Sabha MP A.A. Rahim described the event as a ‘real story of Kerala,’ showcasing an example of social harmony.

At that time, the police accepted the couple’s claim that the girl was of legal age and had the right to marry of her own choice.

Monalisa, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, began her relationship with Farman Khan from Maharashtra approximately 18 months ago via social media. Due to the inter-religious nature of their relationship, they chose Kerala for their wedding to avoid potential opposition.

Now, the revelation of her being a minor has turned the entire situation on its head. This has raised questions not only about the validity of the marriage but also about the role of local authorities and political support in this case.
