New Delhi, April 23: India has welcomed the decision to implement visa-free transit for Indian citizens passing through French airports. This initiative is expected to simplify travel and enhance connectivity between the two nations.
During a media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that this agreement was reached during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai earlier this year, in February.
Jaiswal stated, “We appreciate the announcement of visa-free transit for Indian citizens traveling to and from French airports. As you may recall, during the meeting in Mumbai, an agreement was made to eliminate the need for transit visas for Indian passport holders. The French government has now implemented this agreement, allowing Indian citizens traveling solely by air to and from mainland France to bypass transit visa requirements.”
He emphasized that this decision reflects the strengthening partnership between India and France, which was recently elevated to a special global strategic partnership during Macron’s visit. This development is expected to facilitate travel and improve people-to-people connections.
In February, Modi and Macron formally upgraded India-France relations to a ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership,’ marking a historic step that signifies a turning point in bilateral ties.
The announcement was made during high-level discussions at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai, marking Macron’s fourth visit to India and his first to the country’s financial capital. A government release noted that the leaders presented a significant roadmap in defense, technology, and health, reinforcing their commitment to the Horizon 2047 vision.
Last week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri co-chaired India-France Foreign Office talks with Secretary General Martin Briens of the French Foreign Ministry in Paris.
