Washington, March 20: The escalating costs of the Iran conflict and its impact on global markets have deepened divisions within the U.S. Congress. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are questioning the scale and purpose of the proposed war funding request exceeding $200 billion.
According to CNN, the White House is preparing to demand substantial new funding for the war. However, doubts are growing within President Donald Trump’s party regarding the clarity of the strategy and timeline.
Lawmakers state that the administration has yet to clarify how the funds will be utilized or the duration of U.S. military involvement. Trump has indicated that the request could be significant, asserting that the military needs resources to maintain its strength.
He stated, “We want to be in the best shape we’ve ever been.” He added, “To ensure we remain at the top level, this is a small price to pay.”
However, this argument faces opposition. Some Republican leaders have openly rejected the additional spending, which many believe signals a potential “endless war.”
Representative Lauren Boebert remarked, “I say no. I’ve already informed the leadership. I’m tired of spending money on wars. People in my state, Colorado, are struggling to make ends meet. We need America First policies now.”
Representative Chip Roy questioned, “What are we doing? We’re talking about ground troops. We’re discussing such prolonged activities. They still need to fully brief us and explain how we will pay for this and what the mission is.”
Fiscal conservatives have also raised concerns about whether the proposed funding could increase. Representative Thomas Massie asked, “This raises the question, how long do they plan to stay there? What are the objectives? Is this the first $200 billion? Will it turn into a trillion?”
Conflict in the Gulf has intensified. U.S. and allied forces have ramped up operations around the Strait of Hormuz, deploying attack aircraft and helicopters to target Iranian naval assets and secure vital shipping routes.
General Dan Ken stated, “The A-10 Warthog is now deployed on the southern front, targeting fast-attack vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Apache helicopters have also joined the fight on the southern front.”
Attacks on infrastructure in the region have led to a rapid increase in oil prices, raising fears of supply disruptions. Experts warn that if the conflict continues, the economic impact could deepen.
Energy analyst Anna Jacobs noted, “Energy warfare has been utilized since day one. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected global supply routes.”
Lawmakers from both parties claim they have not received a complete and clear assessment of the costs. Some Republican leaders have proposed limiting spending or establishing conditions for a Pentagon financial audit before offering support.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated, “It remains to be seen” whether this request will pass. Democratic leaders are opposed to approving funds under current circumstances, complicating the administration’s efforts to garner congressional support.
This conflict has also sparked a broader policy debate within the administration, including discussions on whether easing sanctions on Iranian oil could stabilize global prices.
Officials suggest that doing so could bring additional supply into the market. However, experts warn that it could strengthen Iran’s financial position during the war.
