New Delhi, August 29: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the devastating floods in Nepal. He has urged for the safe return of stranded Indians and called for humanitarian assistance to be sent to Nepal.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Kharge expressed deep concern over the catastrophic floods that have resulted in significant loss of life and property. According to media reports, over 500 people have died, and nearly 1,000 are still missing. Thousands are in dire need of food, medicine, shelter, and other essential aid.
Kharge requested that the government ensure adequate humanitarian and relief support for those affected by the floods, in collaboration with the Nepalese government.
He also highlighted the plight of many Indian citizens and people of Indian origin stranded in various parts of Nepal due to the floods. He urged that relevant authorities expedite rescue and evacuation efforts, ensuring all necessary arrangements for their safe and prompt return to India.
Citing recent information from the Ministry of External Affairs, Kharge noted that approximately 320 Indian nationals are currently uncontactable in Nepal. He expressed hope that the Indian government would take immediate steps to provide all possible assistance during this challenging time.
In a separate letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge described the floods as a severe natural disaster. The loss of life, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the displacement of countless individuals have caused immense suffering in the affected communities.
He emphasized the deep and lasting bond between the people of India and Nepal. In this time of sorrow, India must stand firmly with its neighbors and provide all possible support to those impacted by this calamity.
Kharge urged the government to consider providing immediate and comprehensive humanitarian and disaster relief assistance to Nepal. He specifically suggested deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in coordination with the Nepalese government wherever necessary, to aid in rescue, evacuation, and relief efforts in the affected areas.
He noted that the NDRF’s expertise and experience in disaster management could be invaluable in saving lives and providing immediate relief to those facing this significant tragedy.
Kharge expressed hope that the Home Ministry would approach this matter with seriousness and sensitivity, taking all necessary steps to deliver India’s assistance to the flood-affected people of Nepal.
