New Delhi, April 5: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has made a significant decision regarding the upcoming by-election for the Maharashtra Assembly. The party has nominated advocate Akash Vishwanath More as its candidate for the Baramati Assembly seat.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidacy of advocate Akash Vishwanath More for the 201-Baramati Assembly constituency. This decision was announced in a press release from the AICC, with General Secretary K.C. Venugopal providing the details on April 5, 2026.
The Baramati seat became vacant following the passing of former Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar. Ajit Pawar’s wife, current Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, is the NCP candidate, while Congress has now entered the fray, making the election more competitive.
Located in Pune district, the Baramati Assembly constituency is traditionally considered a stronghold of the Pawar family. Ajit Pawar had won this seat eight times. Following his demise, by-elections for Baramati and Rahuri constituencies are scheduled for April 23, 2026, with the counting of votes set for May 4, 2026.
By fielding a candidate in Baramati, Congress has sparked a new debate within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The party believes that its presence in such a significant area should be reinforced. Advocate Akash Vishwanath More is an active local lawyer and is viewed as a youthful face within the Congress party. The party hopes he will perform well by focusing on local issues such as farmer problems, education, health, and development projects.
Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal had previously announced plans to contest both Baramati and Rahuri seats. He stated that elections and sympathy are two distinct matters. Congress had also conducted interviews for several aspirants for Baramati before finalizing Akash More’s name.
