Congress MP Surjewala Calls for Immediate Discussion on West Asia Conflict in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, March 9: The second phase of the Parliament’s budget session is set to begin on Monday. Amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala has submitted a suspension motion in the Rajya Sabha for immediate discussion on the impact of rising tensions on India.

Surjewala invoked Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha’s ‘Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business’ to propose this motion.

The notice states, “This House should suspend Zero Hour, Question Hour, and other listed proceedings for the day to discuss the ongoing developments and tensions in West Asia and their implications for India. The current situation in the region could affect India’s energy supply chains, strategic partnerships, economic interests, and the welfare of Indian citizens residing there. Given these considerations, an urgent discussion on this matter is necessary.”

Surjewala’s notice aligns with the strategy outlined during a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Committee. According to Congress General Secretary Nasir Hussain, it was decided in the meeting that international issues, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia and its impact on India, would be raised during the second phase of the budget session. Additionally, the Congress plans to address the Indo-U.S. trade deal in Parliament.

On another note, a decision may also be made regarding the motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. During the first phase of the budget session, Congress filed a no-confidence motion against Speaker Birla, which has garnered signatures from a total of 118 MPs. This motion has the backing of several opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). However, the Trinamool Congress has yet to sign the motion.

In the no-confidence notice, opposition MPs accused the Lok Sabha Speaker of repeatedly denying them the opportunity to raise significant public interest issues in the House. This led to their decision to bring forth the no-confidence motion against him.
