Bhopal, February 18: Congress legislators staged a protest in the assembly complex, carrying empty piggy banks to highlight the growing debt burden on Madhya Pradesh. On the third day of the assembly’s budget session, they expressed their concerns over the state’s escalating loans.
Led by Opposition Leader Umang Singhar, Congress members gathered in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, holding empty piggy banks and placards with slogans against the government’s economic policies.
Singhar criticized the state government for manipulating figures, claiming that the total debt has surpassed the budget. He stated that the government is continuously accruing debt, which has severely impacted every section of society. The state is now burdened with over ₹5 lakh crore in debt.
He emphasized that the empty piggy bank symbolizes the public’s treasury, which he accused the government and its ministers of squandering. The entire state is suffering under the weight of inflation and debt, leaving the common man in distress.
Singhar pointed out that the government’s recent borrowing of ₹5,600 crore before the budget session indicates that the state is being crushed under the debt burden. He accused the government of using taxpayer money to accumulate debt while merely spreading illusions of development.
Describing the economic survey as a bundle of lies, Singhar claimed that it inaccurately reported the per capita monthly income as ₹15,000 to ₹20,000, which is far from reality. He demanded that the government disclose the true economic situation of the state and issue a white paper on the rising debt.
