Congress Demands Disqualification of Two Legislators Over Allegations of Defection in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, March 18: The Congress Party in Odisha has formally requested the disqualification of two of its legislators by submitting a petition to the Assembly Speaker. The legislators are accused of defection during the recent Rajya Sabha elections.

According to the party, legislators Dasarathi Gamang and Sofia Firdaus violated party lines by not voting for the Congress-supported candidate, Dr. Datteshwar Hota. Reports indicate that they cast their votes in favor of the BJP-supported candidate, Dilip Ray.

The Congress has termed this act a serious breach of party discipline and a blatant violation of constitutional provisions. Citing defection-related rules, the party has demanded the cancellation of their Assembly memberships.

A delegation from the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), led by its president, met with Speaker Surama Padhi, submitting a memorandum that called for appropriate action under constitutional provisions. The delegation included Congress Legislative Party Deputy Leader Ashok Das, Chief Whip S. Rajan Ekka, and legislators Sagar Das, Pavittra Saunta, and Mangu Khila.

The party urged the Speaker to initiate necessary actions and declare both legislators disqualified as per the law.
