New Delhi, July 18: The Congress party has launched a fierce attack following the hospitalization of Sonam Wangchuk after his health deteriorated during a protest at Jantar Mantar. Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal stated that instead of removing Dharmendra Pradhan from his position, the government chose to remove Wangchuk from his protest site. He condemned this action, asserting that the public will deliver justice at the right time.
In a post on the social media platform X, Venugopal expressed, “Instead of removing Dharmendra Pradhan from his position, the government opted to remove Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site. The government should have shown compassion and humanity, but they chose to disrupt a peaceful protest in a fascist manner as public pressure mounted. This is a reprehensible act that the public will address in due time.”
Venugopal emphasized that Congress and the entire opposition will continue their demonstrations vigorously. He demanded that Dharmendra Pradhan be removed from the position of Education Minister before the start of the monsoon session of Parliament.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also criticized the government. He posted, “Our Constitution grants every citizen the fundamental right to voice their opinion and protest peacefully. However, the attitude of the Home Ministry today suggests that it has targeted this very constitutional right.”
Khera also directed his criticism at Delhi’s new police commissioner. He stated, “The Delhi Police operates directly under the Home Ministry, which appointed the new police commissioner just yesterday. If today’s brutal action is the commissioner’s first message, it clearly indicates that his loyalty lies more with power than with constitutional duty.”
He added, “Whether it’s dragging female wrestlers on the streets or mistreating ex-servicemen, this government has repeatedly shown that it respects neither the Constitution nor democratic norms. Today’s incident has once again exposed its mindset.”
The Congress spokesperson concluded, “For this government, peaceful protest is not a fundamental democratic right of a citizen, but rather a ‘law and order’ issue that should be crushed with force. What could be more shameful than the fact that the world’s largest democracy is currently under the control of the most undemocratic and anti-democratic political party?”
