Kalaburagis Tuvar Dal Gains Global Recognition Following PM Modis Mention
Kalaburagis Tuvar Dal receives global attention after PM Modis endorsement, boosting local businesses and export potential.

Kalaburagi, October 27 (Daily Kiran) : Kalaburagi, a district in the Kalyan Karnataka region, is stepping into the global spotlight thanks to its renowned Tuvar Dal, often referred to as the “treasure of Tuvar.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this local product in his monthly radio program, “Mann Ki Baat,” showcasing it as an example of regional goods reaching international markets. The dal is now being exported to the Maldives, generating excitement among local mill operators and producers who anticipate future business growth.
The Kalaburagi district is well-known for its Tuvar Dal, which has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This certification underscores the dal’s quality and nutritional benefits. Following the Prime Minister’s mention, discussions have intensified regarding the international recognition and export potential of this local staple. Kalaburagi’s Tuvar Dal is particularly noted for its high protein content, ranging from 18 to 23 percent. The region’s limestone-rich soil contributes to the unique characteristics of the dal.
Nutritional analyses reveal that per 100 grams of the dal, there are 22.30 grams of protein, 1.70 grams of fat, 3.50 grams of minerals, 57.60 grams of carbohydrates, and 335 kilocalories of energy. It also contains 73 milligrams of calcium. Local business owners regard it as a high-quality dal in terms of taste and nutrition. Besides Kalaburagi, Tuvar Dal is also cultivated in Bidar, Yadgir, Vijayapura, and other districts in Karnataka, contributing to the nation’s pulse requirements. Local mill operators believe that promoting the production of high-quality dal can benefit both farmers and businesses.
Pratish Tapadia, director of the Dal Mill Association, noted that Kalaburagi’s Tuvar Dal is famous worldwide and holds a GI tag certificate. He mentioned GI tag number 353, highlighting the higher levels of potassium and calcium found in this dal compared to ordinary varieties. Its superior taste and energy-boosting properties further enhance its appeal.
Prime Minister Modi indicated that Kalaburagi’s Tuvar Dal is now being exported to the Maldives. Many families in the region have been involved in this business for generations. With the right opportunities and recognition, exports of Tuvar Dal could significantly increase.
Tapadia has urged the central government to classify the Tuvar Dal industry as an agriculture-based industry. Currently, it does not hold this classification, which he believes would benefit both farmers and mill operators. Local entrepreneurs also stress the need to regulate pulse imports and encourage farmers to cultivate high-quality dal, which could boost local production and create new opportunities in the pulse trade.
