Despite facing early challenges, Gauff maintained control of the match and saved several break points. This marks the fourth time she has reached the Round of 16 in Miami. The 22-year-old is now aiming for her first quarter-final appearance at a WTA 1000 event.
Gauff initially took a 2-0 lead with an early break, but Parks responded by winning six consecutive games to claim the first set 6-2. However, Gauff turned the tide, dominating the match by winning 12 of the next 13 games, ultimately finishing with a score of 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 in just 1 hour and 50 minutes.
After her victory, Gauff remarked, “It was really tough. She was playing very well, and she’s one of those players whose game can be excellent one moment and off the next. That’s why you get caught in a fine line where you need to be aggressive but also give her a chance to play. I think I leaned a bit too much in the other direction. Then in the second and third sets, I tried to play more aggressively. I made some changes on my returns, and I think that made the difference.”
This win marks Gauff’s 11th victory at the WTA level after losing the first set since the start of the 2025 season, tying her with Madison Keys and Anastasia Potapova. The only player with more wins after dropping a set during this timeframe is Jessica Pegula, with 13. Additionally, among players born after 2000, Gauff ranks second in WTA 1000 event wins, with a total of 104. Iga Swiatek leads with 130 victories in WTA 1000 events.
In the next round, Coco Gauff will face Sorana Cirstea, who is looking to reach her first quarter-final in a WTA 1000 event. The experienced Romanian player, who is in her final season on tour, defeated 21st seed Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-2.
