New Delhi, August 4 (H.S.) — Air India has issued a public apology and initiated a deep-cleaning protocol after passengers on board flight AI 180, operating from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata, reported spotting cockroaches inside the aircraft. The incident prompted immediate action from the airline, including relocating affected passengers and conducting an emergency sanitation procedure during a stopover in Kolkata.
According to an official statement released by Air India on Monday, two passengers noticed “small cockroaches” in their seating area. The cabin crew responded by relocating them to alternate seats in the same cabin class to ensure comfort. Ground staff carried out an intensive cleaning during the Kolkata layover, the airline confirmed.
Air India stated that, despite routine fumigation practices, such occurrences can occasionally happen due to insects entering the aircraft during ground operations. The airline added that a detailed investigation is underway to identify the source and take preventative measures. The company has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers.
The incident comes amid a series of technical issues and service disruptions plaguing the Tata-owned airline. Just a day prior, two separate Air India flights were affected due to technical problems. One flight, AI Express IX 2718 from Bengaluru to Kolkata, had to return after being airborne for over two hours due to a technical fault. Another flight, AI 349 from Singapore to Chennai, was cancelled for maintenance reasons.
These recurring issues have raised questions about the airline’s maintenance standards and operational efficiency, especially in light of its recent efforts to revamp its image under the Tata Group’s management.
