Mumbai, May 30: The prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have seen an increase. On Saturday, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) raised CNG prices by ₹2 per kilogram, bringing the retail rate to ₹86 per kilogram.
These new prices will be applicable in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other areas served by the company. This marks the second price hike this month; MGL had previously increased prices by ₹2 per kilogram on May 14.
Additionally, the company has also raised the rates for piped natural gas (PNG) in the MMR by ₹0.50 per unit.
The increase in prices is attributed to ongoing pressures in international energy markets and supply disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia.
In recent weeks, petrol and diesel prices have also risen, as government oil marketing companies have passed on the impact of rising global crude oil prices to consumers. On Saturday, petrol prices in Mumbai stood at ₹111.21 per liter, while diesel was priced at ₹97.83 per liter.
Meanwhile, the central government has directed state-run fuel retailers to strengthen their liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reserves to ensure adequate supply. Oil marketing companies have been urged to maintain LPG stocks equivalent to at least 30 days of domestic demand.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported earlier this week that, under government directives, public sector oil companies are currently incurring daily losses of up to ₹550 crores on the sale of petrol, diesel, and LPG. This is due to their decision not to pass the full burden of global price increases onto domestic consumers.
The ministry stated that the supply of crude oil, petrol, and diesel remains adequate, but some areas are experiencing shortages due to panic buying.
