CM Omar Abdullah Urges PM Modi to Use Diplomacy to End War in West Asia

Jammu, March 28: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to leverage diplomacy to end the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Abdullah urged Modi to utilize India’s strong diplomatic ties with major global powers to help resolve the conflict and alleviate humanitarian suffering in the region.

His remarks came during the ongoing budget session of the assembly, where he highlighted the escalating war in the Middle East, which has impacted millions of lives both in the region and beyond.

The Chief Minister emphasized the humanitarian cost of the conflict, noting that while global discussions often revolve around power shifts, strategic issues like the Strait of Hormuz, and rising oil prices, there has been a lack of clarity regarding the ongoing suffering of the Iranian people.

He pointed out that this crisis directly affects India, mentioning that many Indian citizens, including those from Jammu and Kashmir, are stranded in Iran. He also highlighted the visible impacts at home, such as long queues at petrol stations and the emotional distress felt by the public.

CM Abdullah stated, “As representatives of the people, we have every right to raise our concerns in this house.” He acknowledged that while the assembly may not be in a position to halt the war, India’s diplomatic standing places it in a unique position to contribute to peace efforts.

Referring to India’s relationships with the United States, Israel, Iran, and other regional powers, Abdullah expressed confidence in the central government’s ability to play a constructive role. He urged the Prime Minister to use these relationships and personal diplomatic channels to expedite the resolution of the conflict.

He further stated that ending the war would not only reduce the suffering of affected populations but also pave the way for peaceful coexistence among nations.

The Chief Minister condemned the “unjust and illegal war” imposed on Iran and expressed condolences to all those who have lost their lives in the conflict, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates.

Reiterating his appeal, he stressed that the Indian government must make every effort to end the war as soon as possible, emphasizing that “the sooner it ends, the greater the benefit for humanity.”

He framed the issue not as a religious crisis but as a humanitarian one, stating, “This is not the slaughter of one religion, but the slaughter of humanity.”

He concluded his address with the belief that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly would fully support any efforts by India to play a meaningful role in ending the conflict.
