Kolkata, April 19: The future of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) in West Bengal has been shrouded in uncertainty since Sunday. This confusion intensified following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promise to provide jobs to I-PAC employees in Kolkata.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that I-PAC had sent an email to its Kolkata office staff, informing them that operations in West Bengal would be paused for 20 days. Employees were instructed to take ‘short leave’ during this period.
Within an hour, various media outlets reported that the Trinamool Congress, not I-PAC, had issued a statement denying the news of a temporary halt to operations in the state.
However, during an election rally in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, the Chief Minister stated that if necessary, I-PAC employees could join the Trinamool Congress and would be offered employment.
She also claimed to have discussed this matter with her party’s general secretary and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee.
Banerjee warned the BJP against targeting political consultancy firms and accused them of attempting to manipulate the upcoming state assembly elections at the end of this month.
I-PAC has been functioning as the electoral strategy agency for the Trinamool Congress for several years.
The Chief Minister remarked, “The Enforcement Directorate is conducting raids daily, especially during elections. Those working for us are being threatened to leave the state. If you intimidate them, they will join my party, and we will provide them jobs. I assure you, no one will be left unemployed. I spoke to Abhishek Banerjee this morning. Let me be clear, this is a conspiracy. How much chaos will you create, and how many votes will you cut? After that, you will implement the NRC.”
She also accused the BJP-led central government of targeting her security personnel and lawyers through central investigative agencies.
Banerjee stated, “Raids are being conducted at the homes of Trinamool leaders. But why are no raids happening at the homes of BJP leaders? The ED raided the home of the person managing my income tax. They wasted an entire day at Debashish Kumar’s (Trinamool Congress candidate) house, preventing him from campaigning. We are recording all of this and will file cases. Are you trying to kill me? Do you think you can win Bengal by killing me? Try it once. The CPI-M tried and failed. Now, all the rotten people from CPI-M have joined your party.”
She targeted BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari without naming him, questioning why no raids were conducted at his home. The Chief Minister concluded, “The biggest thief is a traitor. Why isn’t there a raid at his (referring to Suvendu Adhikari) house? Why not at his brother’s or father’s house?”
