Beijing, April 16: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has recommended that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi resume navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This suggestion comes at a time when ongoing regional tensions have heightened uncertainty regarding global energy supplies.
On Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry detailed the conversation between Wang and Araghchi, emphasizing that any disruption in the Hormuz Strait could impact not only the region but also the global economy. A significant portion of the world’s oil trade passes through this maritime route, underscoring its strategic importance.
Beijing has urged Tehran to exercise restraint and avoid disrupting international shipping. Moreover, China stressed that the resolution of the current crisis should come through dialogue and diplomatic efforts, not military action.
According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang remarked, “The current situation has reached a critical juncture between conflict and peace, and the path to peace is opening.”
Wang Yi noted that while Iran’s sovereignty and security in the Hormuz Strait must be respected, it is equally essential to guarantee the safe and free passage of vessels through the route. He assured that China supports maintaining a ceasefire and resuming dialogue.
The Chinese statement indicated that Araghchi expressed hope that Beijing would play an active role in promoting peace and ending hostilities, and that Iran is prepared to continue seeking a fair and genuine resolution through peaceful negotiations.
China’s appeal is also linked to its economic interests, as it is the world’s largest energy importer, with a significant portion of its oil supply coming from West Asia. Any disruption in the Hormuz Strait could directly affect its energy security.
In recent days, increasing military activities and concerns over the safety of vessels in the region have also impacted oil prices in international markets. Several countries have begun taking additional measures to ensure the safety of their ships.
