China Aims for 76% Urban Waste Recycling Rate by 2030

Beijing, June 13: China has set an ambitious goal to achieve a recycling rate of over 76% for urban domestic waste by the year 2030. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

The declaration coincided with the fourth National Urban Domestic Waste Sorting Promotion Week, celebrated nationwide from May 25 to May 31. A national conference on urban waste sorting was also held in Beijing during this period.

The Chinese government is focusing on waste sorting, reduction, resource reuse, and safe disposal this year. Efforts are underway to strengthen the management of recyclable materials and enhance waste recovery rates.

Over the past decade, China has made significant strides in waste management. Currently, nearly all residential communities in 297 prefecture-level cities and above have implemented waste sorting systems. A total of 199 local regulations related to waste management have been enacted in these cities, along with the issuance of over 100 technical standards.

According to statistics, by the end of 2025, China is expected to operate 1,137 waste incineration facilities, with a combined daily processing capacity reaching 1.18 million tons.

Fifteen provincial-level regions, including Beijing, Zhejiang, and Shandong, have achieved “zero landfilling” for domestic waste. The pollutant emission control standards in these areas are among the strictest in the world.

Experts believe that this initiative will not only enhance urban cleanliness and environmental protection but also significantly contribute to green development and sustainable resource utilization.
