China Advocates for Continuous Improvement of UN Security Council Sanctions System

Beijing, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, highlighted the necessity for ongoing improvements to the UN Security Council’s sanctions system during an informal meeting on October 2. This meeting focused on the roles of coordinators in lifting sanctions.

Sun pointed out that two years ago, the Security Council unanimously passed a resolution that significantly amended the functions of these coordinators. The resolution mandates that coordinators provide more comprehensive and detailed information to relevant sanctions committees when reviewing applications for lifting sanctions. This change aims to enhance the transparency and fairness of the sanctions system.

He stressed that coordinators must perform their duties in an impartial and objective manner. Furthermore, he urged Security Council members to take a proactive role in supplying coordinators with necessary information while respecting their professionalism and independence. The reports and views from coordinators should be carefully considered, and committees should be supported in making fair and responsible decisions regarding sanctions removal.

Sun also called on the international community to make good use of the sanctions system. He advocated for the Security Council to promote a better understanding of its sanctions mechanisms, which includes regulating the implementation of sanctions and ensuring the proper use of exemption and waiver arrangements.

This call for reform underscores China’s commitment to a more effective and equitable sanctions process within the UN framework.
