China Accelerates Integration of Advanced Technologies in Shipping Industry

Beijing, March 30: According to information received from the Chinese Ministry of Transport on Monday, China will accelerate the deep integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into the shipping industry. To this end, the Ministry of Transport, along with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and two other departments, has jointly released the “Intelligent Shipping 2030 Action Plan.”

This plan outlines the overall goals, key tasks, and safety measures for China’s intelligent shipping development during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).

As per the plan, by 2027, China aims to achieve deep integration of AI and shipping elements, making significant progress in key technologies. More than three intelligent shipping testing areas will be established, over five testing routes will be opened, more than ten intelligent shipping scenarios will be developed, and over a hundred intelligent ships will be operated.

By 2030, China is expected to master major technologies fully, create a new model for the coordinated development of technology, industry, and governance, and reach an internationally leading level in intelligent shipping development.

The plan outlines 11 key tasks focused on four dimensions: achieving success in technological tools, empowering application testing, upgrading infrastructure, and improving regulatory governance.

An official from the Ministry of Transport stated that this plan addresses obstacles in China’s intelligent shipping development and will play a crucial role in achieving the goal of making China a transportation superpower by 2035. It will provide strong momentum for China to secure a leading position in the global intelligent shipping sector.
