Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to Release Turtles on His Birthday

Bhopal, March 25: Mohan Yadav, the 19th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, will celebrate his 61st birthday on March 25 by releasing a dozen turtles into the Bamenar River. Born on March 25, 1965, in Ujjain, Yadav is a prominent lawyer and political figure in Madhya Pradesh.

Previously, he served as a minister in the state government under former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from 2020 to 2023. After winning the Ujjain South assembly seat for the third consecutive time in November 2023, Yadav took the oath of office as Chief Minister on December 13, 2023, succeeding Chouhan, who is now the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

On this occasion, Yadav will release the turtles at the Bamenar River within the Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve. He will also lay the foundation for a ‘soft-release boma’ to aid in the rehabilitation of cheetahs in the reserve. This initiative is part of the state government’s plan to establish Rani Durgavati Sanctuary (Naoradehi) as the third major destination for cheetahs in the last three years, following Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

A few months ago, a decision was made to relocate some cheetahs from Kuno National Park, and preparations are underway to bring them to Naoradehi soon.

Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve is the largest in Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of 2,339 square kilometers and encompassing 72 villages across the Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur districts. It was declared a tiger reserve in 2023, making it the seventh in Madhya Pradesh and the 54th in India, currently housing 32 tigers.

Known as the ‘Land of Wolves,’ this reserve has the highest population of wolves. Its landscape is ideal for cheetahs, resembling the scenery found in South Africa. The reserve is also home to approximately 240 bird species, making it a significant attraction. Wildlife diversity includes tigers, leopards, wolves, bears, jackals, hyenas, foxes, wild boars, nilgai, four-horned antelopes, blackbucks, chinkaras, turtles, and crocodiles.
