Chennai, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : As Ganesh Visarjan approaches, Chennai is gearing up for extensive security and traffic management. The celebrations will peak on Sunday with processions leading to the immersion of hundreds of large Ganesh idols into the sea.
Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated on September 14, allowing the installation of approximately 37,000 idols across public spaces, with 1,562 of those set up in Chennai. While some idols have already been immersed, the majority will be part of the grand processions this Sunday.
To ensure safety, the Greater Chennai Police have deployed 16,500 officers along with 2,000 home guards. Authorities have warned that legal action will be taken against anyone violating restrictions or disrupting public order.
Four designated immersion sites have been established: Srinivasa Puram in Pattinapakkam, University Nagar in Neelankarai, Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, and an area near the Popular Weighing Platform in Thiruvottiyur. Special arrangements have been made in coordination with Greater Chennai Corporation officials at these locations.
The police have instructed that idols must be transported only via designated routes and immersed at the specified sites. Temporary control rooms and assistance centers are set up at all immersion points, equipped with necessary tools for the process. Boats will also be used to transport larger idols to the sea.
In preparation for emergencies, fire trucks, ambulances, motorboats, and trained volunteers will be on standby. Surveillance towers will monitor key locations, with officers utilizing binoculars and drones to oversee the processions and immersion sites. Mounted police will patrol to deter criminal activity and respond swiftly to any incidents. Traffic adjustments will be implemented during the processions to ensure a smooth flow.
