Central Governments Withdrawal of Sugar Control Draft Welcomed by Minister Jayant Singh

New Delhi, May 30: Jayant Singh, the Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed his approval on Saturday regarding the central government’s decision to withdraw the proposed ‘Sugar (Control) Order, 2026.’

Singh shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that this decision reflects the government’s commitment to policy-making based on dialogue, taking into account feedback from farmers, the jaggery industry, and various stakeholders.

The government decided to retract the draft after considering suggestions and feedback from state governments and stakeholders during the consultation process. The official statement confirmed that the draft of the Sugar (Control) Order, 2026, has been formally withdrawn.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, stated that the draft order will be reconsidered before any further action is taken.

This information was disseminated to several ministries and organizations, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry of Cooperation, and the Department of Legal Affairs.

Earlier this month, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a 2.81% increase in the ‘Fair and Remunerative Price’ (FRP) of sugarcane for the sugar season 2026-27 (October-September), raising it to ₹365 per quintal.

According to an official statement released after the CCEA meeting, a premium of ₹3.56 per quintal will be awarded for every 0.1% increase in recovery above 10.25%, while a decrease of 0.1% in recovery will result in a deduction of ₹3.56 per quintal.

To protect the interests of sugarcane farmers, the government also decided that no deductions will be made for sugar mills with a recovery rate below 9.5%. The statement noted that such farmers will receive ₹338.3 per quintal for sugarcane in the upcoming sugar season 2026-27.

The approved FRP will apply to sugar mills purchasing sugarcane from farmers starting October 1, 2026.
