Celebrating Akshaya Tritiya: Mango Festival at Mumbadevi Temple

Mumbai, April 19: Devotees are flocking to temples across the country to celebrate Akshaya Tritiya.

In both North and South India, Lord Vishnu and Narasimha are being offered sandalwood paste for cooling. Meanwhile, the renowned Mumbadevi Temple in Mumbai is celebrating its annual Mango Festival with great devotion.

Hemant Jadhav, the temple administrator, shared that Maharashtra is known for its abundant mango production. The Hapus mango from this region is famous worldwide. Mumbadevi is revered as the guardian goddess of the people of Maharashtra. On Akshaya Tritiya, farmers bring their mangoes from orchards to offer at the goddess’s feet. These mangoes, brought by farmers, traders, and devotees, are used to adorn the deity.

He further explained that traders exporting mangoes also seek blessings for their business before sending their goods abroad. This year, Akshaya Tritiya falls on the same day, attracting numerous devotees who consider themselves fortunate to witness the Mango Festival.

Mumbai derives its name from Mumbadevi, who is worshipped as the protector of the city. The temple was originally built in 1737 at a place called Mangesh, but later relocated to the Marine Lines area during British rule. The temple is over 400 years old and is believed to have been established by fishermen. It is said that Mumbadevi protects the sea and the entire city, and merely visiting her is believed to relieve devotees of their troubles and fulfill their wishes. This is why devotees travel from far and wide to seek her blessings.
