Celebrate Diwali with Abundant Blessings at Visakhapatnam’s Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple
Experience the divine presence of Goddess Lakshmi at Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple this Diwali, a hub of devotion and prosperity.

Visakhapatnam, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : Diwali symbolizes the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, and is celebrated with great fervor across India. Homes and shops are illuminated with lamps, inviting the goddess to bless them. In Visakhapatnam, the Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple stands out as a revered site for devotees seeking prosperity during this auspicious festival.
Renowned for its unique traditions and architecture, the Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple is one of the most significant religious destinations in North Andhra Pradesh. During Diwali and Dhanteras, the temple’s allure increases, drawing thousands of visitors. The idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi is believed to have manifested from the earth, adding to the temple’s mystique.
One striking feature of the temple is that it lacks a roof or dome over its sanctum. The goddess resides beneath the open sky, and on Diwali night, the temple is adorned with lamps and colorful lights. The sight of the self-manifested idol illuminated by the glow of the lamps is truly mesmerizing.
On this special occasion, the goddess is adorned with exquisite gold and silver jewelry, reflecting the meaning of ‘Kanaka,’ which translates to ‘gold.’ Thousands of traders and devotees flock to the temple, hoping to receive blessings for happiness, prosperity, and financial stability. Unlike many traditional Hindu temples, there is no barrier between the devotees and the deity here.
Visitors can approach the sanctum directly, touching the idol and performing rituals like abhishekam and kumkum archana. This personal connection is considered spiritually significant on Diwali. Various religious ceremonies, including special mantras, maha aarti, and panchaamrit abhishekam, are performed to invoke the goddess’s blessings.
The temple operates daily from 5 AM to midnight, but during Diwali, special arrangements are made to accommodate the large crowds and additional rituals. Besides Diwali, the temple also celebrates the month-long ‘Margashirsha Mahotsav’ in November-December, attracting many devotees, especially on Thursdays.
Local beliefs suggest that the idol of Goddess Lakshmi is self-manifested. Discovered in a well in 1912, the idol was later installed at the temple, which is considered the guardian deity of Visakhapatnam. It is widely believed that the goddess fulfills the wishes of those who pray sincerely.
As Diwali approaches, the Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple promises a unique spiritual experience, inviting all to partake in its divine blessings.
