CBI Court Sentences Senior Accountant to Five Years for Bribery

Lucknow’s CBI Special Court on Wednesday convicted Ram Niwas Verma, a senior accountant at the SSB Aliganj zonal pay and accounts office, sentencing him to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees in a bribery case.

The verdict was delivered after the court completed the trial and established the charges against Verma.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a case against Ram Niwas Verma on 2 July 2018. The case originated from a written complaint by a constable posted in the Third Battalion of the SSB in Lakhimpur Kheri. The complaint was forwarded to the CBI through the Chief Vigilance Officer at the SSB Force Headquarters in New Delhi.

The complaint alleged that the senior accountant demanded a bribe of ₹4,000 to process the constable’s bills and allowances.

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Verma on 31 August 2018. The court framed charges on 24 May 2019, following which regular hearings began. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence related to the demand and acceptance of the bribe.

Considering all facts, witness testimonies, and evidence, the court found Ram Niwas Verma guilty of corruption. The court imposed a rigorous imprisonment term of five years and a penalty of ₹1,00,000. The CBI described the verdict as a significant step in the fight against corruption.

In a related development, on 15 January, a special CBI court in Panchkula convicted two private companies and six individuals in a ₹152 crore bank fraud case. The case had been registered on 14 July 2020 based on a complaint by Canara Bank, Karnal, Haryana.
