South Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic building collapse occurred in the Satya Niketan area of South Delhi on September 6, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and leaving several others injured. According to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, ten patients were admitted to the Jay Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, with four arriving deceased. Tragically, one critically injured patient later succumbed to their injuries. Currently, three patients are hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery, while another has been discharged after treatment for minor injuries.
Rescue operations have been underway since the incident, involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, the fire department, and local administration. Rescuers are using advanced cameras to locate individuals trapped in the rubble. Oxygen cylinders have also been sent into the debris to assist those in need.
Ambulance drivers on the scene reported that rescue efforts began around 2 PM. One driver mentioned, “We arrived at 2 PM and have already transported one injured person to the AIIMS Trauma Centre with injuries to both legs. Before us, five to six ambulances had already taken others to the hospital. Traffic made it difficult, but we managed to get him there. There is hope for his recovery.”
Another driver added, “I have made one trip so far. Around 3 PM, we transported a person with leg injuries to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Other ambulances are also bringing in injured individuals. The condition of the patient I transported is serious, but he is expected to survive.”
An ambulance team member noted that their unit received the first call about the incident. Their ambulance is stationed at Safdarjung Hospital, and calls come through their app.
One of the injured, 20-year-old Mohammad Ayan, was working next to the building when it collapsed. His father, Raju Vakil, shared, “My son was trapped under the debris. Children informed us that he was stuck, and we rushed to help.”
Delhi’s Health Minister, Pankaj Kumar Singh, visited the site and expressed his sorrow over the incident. He stated, “This is a very tragic and unfortunate event. We have been monitoring the situation since the afternoon. Our government is focused on saving as many lives as possible and ensuring proper treatment for those hospitalized. Teams from the NDRF and doctors from the Delhi government are on-site.”
In a related development, approximately 150-200 students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) gathered at the Civic Centre to protest the incident. Some attempted to force their way into the main building, leading to clashes with police.
Delhi Police reported that around 15 students were detained and taken to Kamla Market police station, while others were dispersed. A security guard stationed at the MCD office was injured during the scuffle, stating, “We are here to maintain law and order for the students, but they are fighting with us. The situation is currently under control.”
Earlier, Union Health Minister JP Nadda spoke with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to assess the situation and directed all central government hospitals, including AIIMS in New Delhi, to provide necessary medical assistance.
Chief Minister Gupta visited the site to oversee rescue operations, accompanied by Minister Kapil Mishra and senior officials.
The opposition has criticized the government in the wake of this incident. Congress leader Amrita Dhawan accused the government of negligence, stating that while Chief Minister Gupta made a brief visit, many children remained trapped under the debris hours later. Another Congress leader, Manoj Chauhan, lamented the lack of oversight for aging buildings in the area, attributing the incident to government failure.
