Bombay High Court Reserves Decision on Dr. Pradeep Kurulkars Bail Application

Bombay, March 16: The Bombay High Court has reserved its decision on the bail application of Dr. Pradeep Kurulkar, a former scientist with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The court heard extensive arguments from both the prosecution and defense before deciding to announce its order at a later date.

Dr. Kurulkar faces serious allegations of espionage for Pakistan. He was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in May 2023. Investigating agencies claim that he shared sensitive defense information with a female agent linked to Pakistan’s intelligence agency. Reports indicate that Kurulkar had been in contact with this woman through social media and messaging platforms. Initially, she presented herself as someone interested in defense research, but investigations later suggested her connections to Pakistan’s intelligence.

According to the ATS, Kurulkar shared information related to several sensitive defense projects, including technical details about missiles and defense systems. The agencies assert that discussions during these interactions involved highly confidential topics, raising serious national security concerns.

During the hearing, the ATS emphasized that this case is extremely sensitive concerning national security. They argued that Kurulkar’s position granted him access to critical defense projects. The ATS also contended that the investigation is not yet complete, with several digital pieces of evidence still under examination. Granting bail at this stage could potentially compromise the investigation.

In contrast, Kurulkar’s defense attorneys argued that the charges against him have been exaggerated. They claimed that no information shared during the conversations falls under the officially classified category. The defense further asserted that Kurulkar has had a long and unblemished career in defense research, warranting his release on bail.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Bombay High Court has temporarily reserved its order in this case.
