Bolivia Advances to World Cup Playoff Final After Victory Over Suriname

Mexico City, March 27: Bolivia secured a place in the World Cup playoff final by defeating Suriname 2-1 in the Inter-Confederation playoff semifinal. This victory brings Bolivia closer to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 32 years. Their next challenge will be against Iraq.

Shortly after halftime at the BBVA Stadium, Liam Van Gelderen scored to give Suriname a 1-0 lead following a scramble in the six-yard box. However, Bolivia mounted a strong comeback in the second half. In the 72nd minute, Moises Paniagua equalized with a goal, making it 1-1. Just seven minutes later, Miguel Terzeros converted a penalty, putting Bolivia ahead 2-1, a lead they maintained until the final whistle.

With this win, Bolivia will face Iraq in a crucial match on Tuesday. Iraq has not qualified for the World Cup finals since 1986, while Bolivia is aiming to secure a spot in the tournament for the first time since the 1994 edition held in the United States. This match will determine who earns a ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

In other European qualifiers, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Czech Republic also made headlines with their victories in penalty shootouts, advancing further in their World Cup qualification efforts. Bosnia and Herzegovina triumphed over Wales in a thrilling match, while the Czech Republic defeated Ireland in a shootout. Bosnia will now face Italy, while the Czech Republic will take on Denmark.

Additionally, Victor Gyökeres scored an impressive hat-trick, leading Sweden to victory against Ukraine. Sweden’s next match will be against Poland, who recently defeated Albania. Kosovo will also face Turkey in a match set to take place in Pristina.
