Mumbai, April 1: In a recent IPL 2026 match held on Tuesday, the Punjab Kings faced off against the Gujarat Titans in Mumbai, resulting in a disappointing defeat for the Titans. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns about the captaincy of Shubman Gill following this loss.
On JioCinema, Aakash Chopra remarked, “Gill’s bowling strategy was surprising. Even when the game was nearing its end, Siraj had two overs left, and Prasidh Krishna was brought in quite late. Overall, there seemed to be a lack of clarity in Shubman Gill’s captaincy.”
He also expressed worries about the team’s over-reliance on top-order batsmen, as the middle and lower order failed to contribute crucial runs for the Gujarat Titans.
Aakash stated, “For the Gujarat Titans, the top three must perform well, as they aren’t allowing themselves any alternative strategies. Many may not believe it, but Glenn Phillips’ 25 runs are actually his highest score in the IPL so far. You would expect him to contribute consistently, and Washington Sundar needs to score quickly as he appeared somewhat stuck. While Shahrukh Khan has been retained in the team, I felt Kumar Kushagra could have been given a chance. The Titans need to rethink their 4, 5, and 6 batting positions.”
Chopra advised the Punjab Kings to celebrate their two points and not dwell too much on their batting failures during the chase, where they lost four wickets in just four overs, emphasizing that ultimately, points are what matter.
He noted, “This marks the sixth consecutive season that Punjab has won their opening match. In a tournament like the IPL, you don’t overthink the two points you’ve earned; you take them and move on. There’s always something to learn, but it’s better to learn after a win than a loss. There were many positive aspects, especially in bowling.”
The former opener praised Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer for his captaincy, highlighting that he used only five bowlers and rotated them smartly. Young Australian batter Cooper Connolly stepped up and led the team to victory. Yes, they could have finished the game earlier, but in the end, it’s the two points that count.
