Chandigarh, April 1: In an exciting match on Tuesday, the Punjab Kings faced off against the Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium during IPL 2026. Punjab Kings secured a thrilling victory, winning by three wickets and marking a strong start to the season. However, the match saw Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, sustain an injury.

During Punjab’s innings, Iyer was batting alongside Cooper Connolly when a shot from Connolly struck Iyer on the hand. The impact was severe, causing Iyer to collapse on the pitch. After receiving treatment from the medical team, he returned to bat but was dismissed shortly after the injury.

Post-match, Iyer addressed his injury, stating, “I can only say that it feels good and is the same as before. I don’t want to complicate it. I want to stay positive and hope everything will be fine.”

Iyer’s comments suggest that the injury is not serious, and he is expected to be fully ready for the next match. Before his dismissal, Iyer scored 18 runs off 11 balls, including two consecutive sixes.

In terms of match performance, Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bowl first, restricting Gujarat Titans (GT) to 162 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. GT’s captain Shubman Gill scored 39 runs off 27 balls, while Jos Buttler contributed 38 runs off 33 balls. Glenn Phillips added 25 runs off 17 balls.

For Punjab, Vijay Kumar Vaishak took three wickets, Yuzvendra Chahal claimed two, and Marco Jansen picked up one wicket.

Punjab chased down the target in 19.1 overs, scoring 165 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Cooper Connolly was the standout performer, remaining unbeaten with 72 runs off 44 balls, which included five sixes and five fours. Prabhsimran Singh also made a notable contribution with 37 runs off 24 balls.

For GT, Prasidh Krishna was impressive, taking three wickets for 29 runs in four overs, while Kagiso Rabada, Ashor Sharma, Rashid Khan, and Washington Sundar each took one wicket.

Cooper Connolly was named Player of the Match.
