Bengaluru, April 29: The Karnataka BJP has launched a fierce attack on the Congress government following the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers protesting an event related to Umar Khalid. R. Ashok, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, described the arrests as a disgraceful misuse of power.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Ashok stated, “The arrest of BJYM workers is a calculated attempt to suppress nationalist voices and intimidate the youth of the state.”
He emphasized, “There should be no doubt that the Karnataka BJP will confront this head-on. We will not allow Karnataka to become a safe haven for divisive forces while patriots are imprisoned.”
Ashok accused the Congress government of engaging in appeasement politics, claiming, “The Karnataka Congress government has crossed all limits and is now openly siding with the wrong side.”
He pointed out the hypocrisy in allowing figures like Umar Khalid, who faces serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), to have a platform while arresting protesting BJYM workers. “This is not just hypocrisy; it is collusion,” he said.
The BJP leader alleged that the current environment in the state targets those who speak in favor of the nation while silencing those who question divisive ideologies.
He questioned, “Has Karnataka now become a state where patriotism is punished, and provocation is protected?”
On Tuesday, BJYM workers protested near the Bangalore International Centre in Domlur, opposing the Karnataka government’s approval of a book launch event featuring former JNU student leader Umar Khalid.
Currently, Khalid is imprisoned in Tihar Jail under the UAPA in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.
During the protest, BJYM workers chanted slogans against the Congress government and displayed posters allegedly denouncing “urban Naxals” and supporters of terrorism.
The police initially detained the protesters and later arrested them. A memorandum was also submitted to Bengaluru Police Commissioner S. Kumar Singh on Monday, demanding the cancellation of the event’s approval.
