Kolkata, April 17: The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reached out to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday. They accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of deliberately spreading defamatory, manipulated, and AI-generated video content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The BJP alleged that the videos were fabricated and presented in a misleading manner to create false perceptions. The intent was to mislead voters and manipulate the electoral atmosphere.
The party also urged the commission to immediately instruct the TMC to remove these videos from all social media platforms and issue a show-cause notice to the ruling party.
In a separate complaint filed with the commission, the BJP accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of making misleading, false, and inflammatory public statements regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines.
The complaint stated that the Chief Minister claimed that the BJP was attempting to manipulate the electoral process with the help of the ECI. It specifically mentioned her assertion that if there were any malfunctions in the EVMs and VVPAT machines, election officials would not replace them but instead insert a “chip,” causing delays for voters during manipulation.
The BJP requested the commission to take appropriate action against the Chief Minister for making such allegations and to prevent her from making further false and misleading statements about EVMs and VVPATs.
Additionally, the BJP’s West Bengal unit filed a third complaint with the ECI regarding an alleged attack on the convoy of Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari by TMC workers in Bally, Howrah district, during an election roadshow on Wednesday evening.
In the letter, the BJP noted that there have been several incidents in recent days where BJP leaders and workers faced physical attacks in Kolkata and surrounding districts. They reported being obstructed from conducting lawful electoral activities, threatened, and having their party materials vandalized, all while lacking adequate police protection despite prior notice and permission.
The BJP urged the commission to direct the immediate registration of an FIR against all involved in the Bally incident and to ensure a strong deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in sensitive areas to guarantee equal opportunities for all candidates in the elections.
