Bengaluru, February 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the Karnataka Congress government‘s recent order restricting media personnel’s access within the assembly premises. They likened this action to imposing a state of emergency in the region.

R. Ashok, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, stated on Wednesday that this situation reflects an emergency in Karnataka. He accused the Congress-led government of demonstrating an undemocratic and authoritarian attitude by imposing a media ban to conceal its failures, mistakes, and corruption.

He questioned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Rahul Gandhi, asking if the Constitution they often showcase includes provisions for press freedom. “Are you afraid that more irregularities will be exposed?” he added.

Ashok emphasized that the assembly is not a Congress party office but a public house, the center of power for seven crore Kannada speakers. No one has the right to prevent media personnel from entering.

He urged the government to immediately withdraw the unconstitutional order that restricts journalists to designated areas for interviews within the assembly. He called on the state government to grant the media the freedom to perform its duties independently, as the fourth pillar of democracy.

BJP state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra also condemned the ban, stating that the party firmly opposes the Congress government’s decision to restrict media access in the assembly.

Speaking to reporters, Vijayendra claimed that the public already views the Congress government as ineffective, and this latest decision only reinforces that perception. He further alleged that the government has failed to control slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” and noted that even within the assembly, such slogans were raised without any evidence of action taken by the government against alleged anti-national elements.
