Chandigarh, March 17: In the recent Rajya Sabha elections held in Haryana, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition party, Congress, each won one seat. The elections were marred by complaints of violation of voting secrecy and cross-voting.
BJP’s Sanjay Bhatia and Congress’s Karamveer Bauddh emerged victorious in the elections. Independent candidate Satish Nandal, supported by the BJP, faced defeat. A total of 88 legislators cast their votes, while two members of the Indian National Lok Dal, Arjun Chautala and Aditya Devilal, abstained from voting.
In the 90-member assembly, the BJP holds 48 seats, Congress has 37, the Indian National Lok Dal has two, and independent candidates occupy three seats.
As the vote counting concluded at 4 PM on Monday, leaders from both parties claimed victory for their respective candidates. However, the counting process began late at night after receiving clearance from the Election Commission of India.
Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging attempts to interfere with the election’s fairness. Citing the sensitivity of the matter, he requested a meeting with a party delegation before the announcement of results. In response, the BJP accused Congress legislators Parmveer Singh and Bharat Singh Beniwal of violating voting secrecy during the election.
Congress also accused Transport Minister Anil Vij of breaching election rules.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini cast the first vote of the day. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister, stated that their party’s candidate secured one of the two seats. He told reporters, “This is our victory.”
Fearing cross-voting, Congress, which has 37 legislators in the 90-member house, sent its members to resorts and hotels in Himachal Pradesh. Six legislators did not travel to Himachal for personal reasons. On Sunday night, Congress dispatched 31 legislators from Shimla to Kasauli. Accompanied by party General Secretary and Haryana in-charge B.K. Hariprasad and Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda, the legislators were escorted under tight security from their hotel to Chandigarh on Monday morning.
