Bhubaneswar, April 22: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a strong attack on the state government following reports of the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl in the Brahmagiri area of Puri district. The party claims that the safety of women and children in the state has deteriorated significantly.
During a press conference on Tuesday, BJD Vice President and former minister Sanjay Kumar Das Burma expressed deep concern over the incident. He stated that the security situation for women and children is worsening day by day.
Das Burma accused the BJP-led state government of failing to take adequate measures to prevent such heinous crimes against women, despite repeated protests and demands from the BJD and other opposition parties.
He further noted that such incidents are frequently occurring at tourist sites across the state.
“Brahmagiri is located near Chilika Lake, one of the major tourist attractions. Such incidents adversely affect the state’s tourism potential. Therefore, the police must take this matter seriously, arrest the accused immediately, and ensure exemplary action is taken in this case,” he emphasized.
He also mentioned that a fact-finding team from the BJD will soon visit the site, meet with the victim, and gather detailed information regarding the incident before presenting the party’s stance.
Meanwhile, the regional party has formed a nine-member delegation that will visit the victim’s village and meet her family.
In a press statement, the party noted, “The delegation will assess the ground situation, interact with local police officials and school authorities, and collect relevant information regarding the incident. The aim is to ensure swift justice and provide all necessary support to the victim and her family. The team will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident and submit a detailed report to the party president for further action.”
It is noteworthy that on Sunday, the victim was allegedly taken to a secluded area by the accused while she was standing near her home and was sexually assaulted. The seriously injured girl was later taken to a nearby community health center for treatment.
On Tuesday, Puri district Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh informed reporters that after receiving information from hospital officials on Monday, the Brahmagiri police registered a case and launched a search operation to apprehend the absconding accused.
