Patna, June 16: The Bihar government is rapidly advancing plans to develop the state’s major religious and cultural sites into world-class tourist destinations. As part of this initiative, extensive development plans have been proposed for the internationally renowned Sonpur Mela site and the Ambika Bhawani Temple located in the Amii area of Saran district. The tourism department has submitted proposals exceeding ₹37 crores to the central government for both projects.
Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0, a detailed project report for the development of the Sonpur Mela area has been sent to the Ministry of Tourism for administrative approval, amounting to ₹24.29 crores. Held at the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, the Sonpur Mela is recognized not only nationally but also internationally. This fair, which takes place annually during Kartik Purnima, is considered a major hub for religious faith, cultural heritage, and commercial activities.
The project will include the construction of a grand entrance, wide and improved roads, a digital information system, green energy-based facilities, modern parking, attractive lighting, clean restrooms, and other essential amenities for tourists. This development aims to enhance the area for year-round tourism activities.
Additionally, a proposal of ₹13.19 crores has been sent to the central government for the development of the Ambika Bhawani Temple, a prominent Shakti Peeth. This project will focus on beautifying the temple complex, developing the riverbank, creating parking facilities, guest houses, walkways, lighting, and other tourist amenities. These improvements will provide better facilities for devotees and visitors alike.
According to the tourism department, 33 major tourism projects are currently underway across the state. These include significant initiatives such as Punoradharam, Mahabodhi Center, Eco Park, and Lake Front. A Buddhist meditation center is also being constructed in Gaya at a cost of ₹165.44 crores.
Furthermore, to strengthen tourism infrastructure in the state, five five-star hotels are being developed under a PPP model. Two hotels are being built in Rajgir, one in Vaishali, and two in Patna. The government believes that the development of tourist sites will not only enhance the state’s cultural identity but also significantly boost local employment and economic activities.
