Mumbai, March 8: In a significant political development, Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has officially joined the Janata Dal (United) at the party’s office in the presence of senior leaders. Senior Congress leader Hussain Dalwai from Maharashtra commented that this move indicates that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to have its Chief Minister in Bihar.
Dalwai expressed his views, stating that Nishant Kumar will not hold any substantial position and is likely to remain as Deputy Chief Minister. He pointed out that although there are currently two Deputy Chief Ministers, the Chief Minister retains control over all operations. The distinction between the roles is significant, as Deputy Chief Ministers do not possess the same legal or constitutional authority as the Chief Minister. Consequently, this could mark the end of Nitish Kumar’s political influence in the state.
On the allegations against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding disrespect towards President Droupadi Murmu, Dalwai remarked that the office of the President deserves proper protocol. He acknowledged that failing to adhere to protocol is a mistake, but the reasons behind the incident and Banerjee’s subsequent statements will clarify the situation. Nonetheless, he emphasized that proper protocol should have been observed.
Regarding the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Dalwai stated that the Speaker should remain impartial. He criticized Birla for consistently aligning with BJP directives, which led to the resolution being introduced. He believes that if Nitish Kumar’s allies or those of Naidu maintain their neutrality, the resolution is likely to pass.
In response to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s comments on ‘The Kerala Story 2’ and the film industry, Dalwai supported Gandhi’s stance. He noted that since the BJP came to power, some producers have been creating films that sow division within society. He lamented the shift from films that once promoted unity, like ‘Mother India’ and ‘Bandhini,’ to those that foster division.
Dalwai also raised concerns about the electoral rights of citizens, alleging that there have been attempts to disenfranchise large numbers of voters. He claimed that many names have been removed from voter lists, which he views as unconstitutional and detrimental to democracy. He criticized the current Election Commissioner, suggesting that the office is acting under government influence, which undermines its independence.
