Biden Administration Accused of Politically Motivated Case Against Adani Group

Washington, May 19: Republican Congressman Lance Gooden has accused the Biden administration of pursuing a politically motivated case against the Adani Group. He welcomed the $275 million agreement between Adani Enterprises and the U.S. Treasury, calling it a positive step for India-U.S. relations.

Speaking to a news agency, the Congressman expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “It is unfortunate that Gautam Adani had to go through all of this.”

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on Monday that Adani Enterprises Limited agreed to pay $275 million to settle potential civil liabilities for 32 alleged violations of Iran-related sanctions.

Gooden had previously written letters to both the Justice Department and Attorney General Pamela Bondi, questioning the prosecution of the Adani Group. He noted that he had raised concerns with senior officials in the Trump administration as well.

“We reached out to the Biden Justice Department, but there was no success,” he said. “This was one of the early issues I brought up during the Trump administration, and I know they were taking it seriously and prioritizing doing the right thing.”

The Texas Congressman credited Indian-American businessman Arun Agrawal for bringing this issue to his attention. He stated, “I was first informed about this matter by Arun Agrawal, the chairman of the Texas Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors.”

Gooden emphasized that there is an individual in India who is a victim of political prosecution by the Democratic Justice Department. He expressed concern that this case could discourage Indian investment in the U.S.

“I have always believed that encouraging Adani to invest in the U.S. and continuing the good work done by his company and family across India was the right thing to do,” he said.

He reiterated his belief that political motives were behind the prosecution of Adani. “I believe those who pressured the Justice Department had ties to Soros,” he claimed. He argued that these allegations were made “just after President Trump’s election, seemingly to discourage investment in the country, preventing Trump from fulfilling one of his campaign promises to make America great again.”

When asked about future investments by the Adani Group in the U.S., Gooden expressed optimism that Texas could benefit significantly. “Yes, I believe they will invest in Texas, and hopefully in other states as well,” he said. “I think America, our workforce, our energy sector, and many other industries that the Adani Group is involved in will all benefit from this.”

The Congressman also strongly supported India-U.S. relations, describing India as “one of America’s most reliable partners in the Asia-Pacific region.” He added, “I love India. I have been there many times.” He believes that the relationship between the U.S. and India should be as strong as that between any other countries in the world.
