Benefits of Tiryak Tadasana for Body and Mind

New Delhi, February 10: Disorganized daily routines can lead to various physical and mental health issues. Yoga poses can help alleviate these problems, and Tiryak Tadasana is one such beneficial asana. This pose not only promotes physical well-being but also contributes to mental tranquility.

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga is actively raising awareness about healthy living through yoga. Among the various asanas, Tiryak Tadasana, also known as Urdhva Hastottanasana, is highlighted for its effectiveness. This standing pose is an extended version of Tadasana, where the body bends sideways. Awareness is crucial while practicing this asana.

To perform Tiryak Tadasana, start by standing in Tadasana with your feet shoulder-width apart, keeping your body straight and arms relaxed at your sides. Inhale deeply, interlock your fingers, and raise your palms above your head with straight elbows. As you exhale, gently bend your waist to the left or right. Hold this position for 10 to 30 seconds while breathing normally. Repeat this 3 to 5 times.

This asana enhances spinal flexibility, alleviates lower back pain, and reduces stiffness in the sides. It massages the abdomen and intestines, improving digestion and relieving constipation. The muscles in the sides, shoulders, chest, and arms are both stretched and strengthened. Lung capacity increases, making breathing easier. It also improves balance and concentration, reduces stress, and boosts energy levels. Regular practice can help reduce waist fat.

Practicing this asana daily keeps the body flexible, strong, and the mind calm. However, experts recommend some precautions. It is best to practice this pose on an empty stomach in the morning. Avoid bending forward or backward; focus solely on the side stretch. Maintain a slow pace and synchronize your breath—inhale while raising your arms and exhale while bending. If you experience severe pain in the neck, back, or shoulders, or have conditions like hernia, hypertension, heart disease, or have had recent surgery, consult a yoga expert before proceeding.
